Milwaukee 2025

Honourable Mention received for 1989 International Cities Design Competition submission – redesign of Milwaukee downtown, old neighbourhood and suburbia. Design rectifies problems caused by ignorance of sensitive relationship between human and natural systems produced during industrial development of the city. These designs strengthen the city’s viability –‘life-force’ or soul – by reestablishing and reinforcing Milwaukee’s spiritual place in the earth and respect for natural systems while using historical infrastructures that potentially maintain respectful relationships. Particular details: open public spaces along confluence of three rivers and designated flood plains, clarity of street organization, elimination of downtown highways, turning suburbia into distinct Midwest village.
